A 38-year-old man was arrested for abalone smuggling, on Monday, in Hout Bay.
He was caught in possession of a large quantity of lobsters, abalone, prawns, and lobster eggs with an estimated street value of five hundred thousand rand (R500,000), hidden in a big freezer sealed in different plastic bags.
The man was arrested and detained at Hout Bay SAPS, and is expected to appear at the Wynberg Magistrates’ court, once formally charged.
Police said in a statement, that a crime intelligence driven operation by the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team and Counterfeit and Illicit Policing Team followed information received about the suspect, who was in contravention of the Marine Living Resource Act.
