Some 700 informal homes were destroyed by a fire, at the Jika Joe informal Settlement, near Pietermaritzberg, on Sunday.
Siboniso Duma, MEC of Transport in KwaZulu Natal, said he is liaising with Thembi Simelane, Minister of Human Settlements, to schedule a visit to the area, this week.
He also said the Minister would be accompanied by the Executive Director for UN-Habitat.
The Msunduzi Municipality said the majority of residents of the Jika Joe informal settlement, are females.
Mxolisi Mkhize, Mayor of Msunduzi, went to the residents, to speed up the profiling of affected victims.
“It should be remembered that the Department, working with Umsunduzi Municipality and the National Department of Human Settlements, set aside R445 million, to build new houses for the residents of Jika Joe Informal Settlement” said Mkhize.
On Monday, the Department warned snow chasers to stay away from affected areas, such as the R617, where a truck is stuck in the snow.
Duma also said a snowfall response plan is underway, resulting in the closure of the R617 towards Kokstad and some road networks to ensure that motorists are not trapped.
