About 98 families were affected by the recent floods in KwaZulu-Natal, where six people died.

This emerged during a site visit to affected areas by Siboniso Duma, MEC of Transport and Human Settlements and Cyril Xaba, the Mayor of eThekwini.

Four fatalities were reported in Folweni, KwaMakhutha, Demat and Ensimbini after a wall collapsed while the occupants were asleep.

This followed a reported 184mm of rain in the Amanzimtoti area between midnight and 5am on the 20th February.

Areas mostly affected are in the southern parts of the City – Amanzimtoti, Morton, Clairwood, and Isiphingo.

The City provided blankets, mattresses and food hampers to displaced residents.

Disaster and Emergency Services teams are also on the ground, assessing the impact on infrastructure.

Xaba said the City would implement practical measures, including allocating resources to build climate resilient infrastructure.
