Bronze and Umhlanga Main Beaches are temporarily closed.

The eThekwini Municipality said on Tuesday, this is due to a pump station failure at the Ohlange Wastewater Pump Station.

Upon an examination, the City discovered objects obstructing the system.

Gugu Sisilana, the City’s Spokesperson, said proof is the video that went viral, showing officials removing rags that clogged up the pump, leading to its breakdown.

She also said work is already underway, to unblock pumps from rags, animal carcasses, and other household items not intended for sewer lines.

The closure of two beaches, has left  21 open for swimming.

“We strongly urge the public to dispose of waste responsibly. Irresponsible disposal directly undermines sewer infrastructure, disrupts services, and negatively affects the environment resulting in the temporary closure of beaches enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”
