Metro Police officers bust two suspects on Monday, following a tip-off about the transportation of abalone in Gordon’s Bay.
Police went to corner the car, between Faure Marine and Sir Lowry’s Pass Drive.
Upon searching the car, police found four bags in the boot, containing what later turned out to be 489 unshucked abalone.
Two suspects, aged 30 and 34 were arrested for the Illegal Possession of Abalone and were detained at the Gordon’s Bay police station.
JP Smith, MMC for Community Safety in Cape Town, said this is the third abalone bust, in the last six weeks.
“On Tuesday, 14 July, officers arrested three suspects, aged between 27 and 34, found in possession of 223 unshucked abalone and 279 shucked abalone along Victoria Road in Camps Bay. Three days later, on the 17th, they arrested four suspects, aged between 19 and 33, who were found in possession of abalone weighing nearly 90 kilograms, on Clovelly Road in Fish Hoek” said Smith.
