Joburg’s power outage in some areas, is attributed to this week’s heavy rains.
Jack Sekwaila, MMC for the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), substations, transformers, mini-substations, and cable networks are under immense pressure.
This is true in Lyndhurst, Rembrandt Park, Woodlands Estate, Fleurhof, Ennerdale, Lawley, and other regions.
In addition to pressure from the weather, transformers and Ring Main Units were vandalised or stolen, resulting in large-scale outages that require complete replacement of equipment rather than simple repairs.
Sekwaila also said City Power is procuring a new transformer for Alexandra, following a week without electricity, caused by weather- related faults and vandalism.
Multi cable faults and failed mini-substations were reported at the Hursthill, Mayfair, Vrededorp, Pageview, Braamfontein Werf, and the surrounding areas, the Inner City, particularly around the City & Suburban, Marshalltown, Denver, Bruma, Noordwyk and Country View.
Stolen cables in the Lenasia area have affected Lawley, Olifantsvlei, and Ennerdale.
Some 704 calls related to cable faults were reported in Roodepoort, Wilropark, Wilgeheuwel, Fleurhof, and Florida areas.
