The search continues on Tuesday, for one missing person who was travelling with four others, when their vehicle was swept away by Sunday evening’s floodwaters, in Amanzimtoti.

Two occupants managed to escape, leaving three in the vehicle.

Two bodies of men were later recovered from a river on Monday evening.

The floods have left several areas without electricity, including Marina beach, Greenpoint, Park Rynie, Marburg and Harding.

Water systems were also affected, including a major pipe burst (450mm AC) just below the uMzinto Water Treatment Works.

The pipeline supplies uMzinto CBD and surrounding- Farm Isonti, Hazelwood, Ghandinagar, Riverside Park, Asoka Heights, KwaCele, Dududu, Mandawe and Cedars.

The pipeline crosses a stream and is suspected to caved under pressure.

uMngeni-uThukela Water also reported damage to its Raw Water Abstraction System, in Mthwalume over the weekend. The plant supplies water to the uMzumbe and uMdoni Local Municipalities, part of the severely affected Ugu District. 

The water board said the temporary weir used to abstract water from the Mthwalume River, was washed away. As a result, the Treatment Works is unable to abstract raw water for treatment.

Affected areas are Elysium, Bazley, Ifafa, Koelwater, Sezela, Mthwalume Urban, Qoloqolo, Nomakhazana, Sibanini, Bhekulwandle, Mfazazana, Sihlonyaneni, Section 26, Arnold Lushaba Hospital, Nkambini, Bhunwini, Makhoso, Bangibizo, Dembese, Mathulini, Nyangwini and Mgangeni.
