Snowfall has landed in Mpumalanga, with residents sharing videos in various areas, including Volksrust, mountain passes around Dullstroom, Belfast and high-lying sections of the Southern Highveld.
The Chris Hani District shared pictures of families travelling to nearby snow-capped mountains, for an experience in the snow.
This is after a grader was used to make at least some roads drivable.
Roads now open are the N2 Brooksnek Pass towards eMaxesibeni (experiencing snow, the R56 sections from Matatiele to Xaxazana and New Amalfi, the R61 routes from Bizana to Mzamba and Magusheni, R396 from Nqanqarhu to Tsolo and the R61 between Nxuba and Graaff-Reinet.
Similarly, the Newcastle Local Municipality said the N11 Amajuba Pass and Bothas Pass (Memel Road) is now open.
The Municipality said while the roads were cleared and reopened, motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and drive slowly as there is still snow on the roads, with patches that may cause slippery conditions and reduced visibility.
“Reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance, switch on headlights and be visible and avoid sudden braking on potentially icy surfaces” said the Municipality.
It has been snowing over the Sneeuberg Nature Reserve, Nieu-Bethesda, and higher-lying parts of the Chris Hani District, Senqu, Elundini, and Matatiele municipalities, in the Eastern Cape.
It also snowed in the Western Cape, over Franschhoek Pass, Swartberg Pass, Hex River mountains, and areas around Worcester and Rawsonville.
It also snowed in Sutherland, in the Northern Cape, as well as high-lying areas such as Drakensberg Gardens and Swartberg.
