The two year old boy who drowned in Mpumalanga yesterday, is Sibusiso Mnisi.

The police confirmed he drowned in Msholozi C, White River, North of Mbombela, on Tuesday, following heavy rains.

Police opened a case of inquest, and are investigating his case further.

His mom, Thapiseng Mnisi, said the family resides near a stream.

She said the toddler was asleep inside the house when she left to cross the stream.

The child apparently followed her out of the house to cross the stream, which was swollen due to floods.

He was swept away by a strong current and drowned.

Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

He further urged community members to exercise extreme caution, particularly during the current wet weather conditions, as streams, rivers, and dams are overflowing and pose serious danger.
