34-year old Lucky Fanyana Shongwe, is the latest person to have drowned in Mpumalanga.
He drowned at the Sithobela River in Holeka, Ward 6, during a cleansing ritual.
The Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality said Shongwe drowned, while others who were with him in the water survived.
The Municipality also said his next of kin was notified.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Shongwe family during this period of immense grief and loss. We appeal for the community to support them and respect their need for privacy as they mourn” said the Municipality.
The Municipality also urged residents to exercise the utmost caution near rivers and other water bodies.
“The inherent risks, particularly during rituals or group activities, cannot be overstated.”
