Amapanyaza, recruited by the Gauteng Province, to support law enforcement efforts, since 2023, were put on hold last year, after a report by the Public Protector, declared them unlawful.

Speaking at a media briefing, in Pretoria, on Friday, Firoz Cachalia, Minister of the Police, said the wardens will be re-employed as Peace Officers.

He said this is in terms of section 334 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Premier, said the gazetting of this move, is a decisive and positive milestone and a victory for the rule of law.

“We are ready now to use every resource at our disposal to protect our residents.”

Lesufi also said there is a concerted effort to support the police in Gauteng- “the epicentre of crime.”

He also detailed the Provinces’ intervention to tackle crime. 

Last year alone, 250 new cars were donated to the police by the Gauteng Provincial Government.

In addition, 3 helicopters were also donated to the police to fight crime.

Now 9,400 peace officers will report to the police, of these, over 2000 have military training.

The officers will work with other law enforcement agencies, to fight against drugs, gender- based violence, presence at sporting activities and protecting the elderly and learners.

Mmamoloko Kubayi, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, said this initiative is a joint effort with support from all three Departments.
