Names of people struck by lightning near Ixopo, were released by the Department of Cooperative Governance in KwaZulu Natal (KZN), on Wednesday.
Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, MEC of Cooperative Governance in KZN, extended his condolences to the family of Shonaphi Phikisile Mhlongo (66), who was killed by lightning in Springvale, Ward 9 near Ixopo, within the Johannes Phungula Local Municipality.
Two other people also struck by lightning are Thembisile Khumalo (45) of Ngwaqa Village, and Mayford Khanyisani Zulu (36) of Ward 11, KaNokweja.
More than 460 people were displaced following the weekend’s storms in the Harry Gwala and uMgungundlovu Districts.
At least 39 homes were destroyed, along with livestock.
The Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) is coordinating relief, including emergency assistance and counselling for affected families.
The Harry Gwala Municipality also said power supply was interrupted by the weather.
Affected areas are Pietermaritzburg: Imbali, Edendale, Henley, Esigodini, Plessislaer, Fraewwod, Dambuza, Ashdown, Azalea, France, Umlaas Road, Assagay, Camperdown, Vulindlela, Maqongqo, KwaMkhizwane/Nkangala, KwaXimba, Intshanga, Fredville, Gerorgedale, Sankotshe, Spring Valley, Ifafa, Franklin, Mooi River, Oaklands and Highflats, Nkwezla.
