Four male suspects were convicted for tampering with the Usindiso building in Marshalltown.

The building made news in August 2023, when it burnt down, killing 67 people.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said on Sunday, it welcomes the successful conviction and sentencing of the four.

Patrick Jaca, the JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner said two officers were conductig routine patrols on the 26 January 2025, at the Usindiso burnt building, located at the corner of Albert and Delvers Streets. 

The site had previously been identified as a high-risk crime hotspot for theft and vandalism.

During their patrol, the officers heard suspicious activity and entered the structure, where they discovered the four suspects actively destroying interior walls with various implements. 

The suspects were immediately arrested and detained at the Johannesburg Central SAPS.

The men face charges of trespassing (2 years), illegal Immigration (12 months), malicious damage to property (3 years). Deportation awaits him upon completion of his sentence (at own cost).
