An elephant seal was sighted by beachgoers in Mossel Bay, this weekend.
The seal is en route home, to Antarctica.
Judith Kusel, a local in the area, shared with residents, that the “seals are found every now and again, resting on the beaches of the eastern coastline of the Western Cape and immediately protected by Marine Biologists, Cape Nature, SANParks, and local authorities.”
Pinnacle Point Estate said this is an incredible sighting along the Pinnacle Point Estate coastline at Eden Bay!
These seals spend up to 85% of their lives at sea, and come ashore only to breed, moult, or rest during winter.
Some even travel as far as 5,000 km from their haul-out sites.
