About 66 people were killed by floods in Kenya, over the weekend.

Heavy rainfall began on the 6 March, severely hampering the capital, Nairobi.

According to information provided by the European Commission’s Director-General for Civil protection and humanitarian aid operations, 33 of the total amount died in the Nairobi area, 18 in the Eastern region, eight in the Rift Valley, four in Nyanza, two on the Coast, and one in the Central region. 

Several houses were also flooded, as well as roads.

The floods disrupted power and water lines in some areas.

More rain is forecast for the 18th of March 2026.

The Kenya Meteorological Department reported a severe drought in that country, just before the floods, which affected some 3.3 million people in arid and semi-arid lands.

The Weather service also recorded about 416 mm at Kabete in the last week, while the Wilson Airport (Nairobi) registered about 160 mm of rainfall in 24 hours on March 6, 2026.

Other areas in Nairobi recorded severe amounts including Eastleigh- 250 mm, Dagoretti- 197.3 mm, Ngong -188.5 mm and Thika -116.2 mm.
