City Power shared pictures of the burnt Central Substation for the first time, on Monday evening, following the fire on Friday.

The power utility’s Isaac Mangena, said the latest assessments confirm extensive damage to key infrastructure, caused by the fire.

“Critical equipment within the substation was severely damaged and has had to be removed, while other components also require replacement as part of the restoration process.”

He said as a result, teams will redirect power supply to alternative routes, within the network, to assist in restoring electricity.

He also said thus far, dry ice cleaning was completed on feeder board 1A, temporary cooling of another transformer in the vicinity, as well as the pumping of water out of underground tunnels.

Affected areas with no power, are Marshalltown, the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas.
