Strong winds blew over trucks in the Breede Valley, on Monday afternoon, due to strong winds.

The Cape Winelands District, urged residents to stay indoors, due to inclement weather, to avoid unnecessary travel, and not attempt to cross areas with fast-flowing water.

As a result, mobile clinics were suspended, and several clinics closed on Monday, but hospitals remain fully operational, under severe pressure.

All schools in the province, also remain closed on Tuesday, 12 May 2026.

In Stellenbosch,  about 100 people were evacuated from Three Streams, on Monday, due to rising rivers. Some are staying with family or friends, while others were accommodated in community halls. 

Many homes and businesses have lost roofs, including the Mountain View Library in the Langeberg area. 

Local municipalities, supported by the Salvation Army and Gift of the Givers, have been distributing sandbags, blankets, food, and toiletries to affected residents.

Flooding and mudslides also led to the closure of, among others, the N1, the toll gates and both the old and new tunnels, Bain’s Kloof, and several low-lying bridges. 

A section of the N1 passing De Wet is flooded and the road has been closed.

The Municipality said it is monitoring dams closely, especially in Linton outside Wellington, which is threatening to overflow.

Similarly residents of the Riverview informal settlement, part of the Cedeberg Municipality, were advised to remain cautious of a rising river nearby, and await an urgent call from authorities to evacuate, if necessary.
