The City of Joburg, Eskom and the Department of Electricity and Energy agreed to work in partnership to find a sustainable solution to the debt challenges.
Eskom issued an intention last week, to reduce, interrupt and/or terminate the supply of electricity, to certain bulk supply points against the City of Johannesburg and City Power.
This is because the City and its power utility- City Power (CP), owe Eskom about 16 billion, excluding the current account of a further R1 582 093 993.32, due on 5 June 2026.
Speaking from City Power Offices in Johannesburg, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy, said it is in the collective interest of all parties to resolve the City of Joburg-Eskom debt matter amicably.
He also said residents who continue to pay for electricity services, should not be adversely affected by the dispute.
The three parties committed to developing tailored solutions that address their respective needs, while respecting existing court judgments.
