Nearly 3 million South Africans registered to vote at the initial National Voter Registration Weekend, starting on the 20-21st of June 2026.
Sy Mamabolo, Chief Electoral Officer, at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) provided figures, trends and insights emerging from the weekend’s activities across the country.
About 477,174 of the total 2.9 million, are first-time registrations.
Mamabolo also said there seems to be strong participation from young people aged 16–29, accounting for 785,078.
He also announced a second Voter Registration Weekend- 1–2 August 2026.
