More than 50 illegal immigrants were arrested by police in Gauteng, on Thursday, in Pretoria Central and Pretoria West.

Nine vehicles were also impounded for road safety while another vehicle was impounded for engine tampering during the same operation in Tshwane. 

The operation formed part of the police’s ongoing Provincial Operation Shanela II.

Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, said detectives also arrested 971 wanted suspects for various crimes. 

This includes 186 suspects for crimes against women and children. 

Traffic officers also issued fines amounting to R34 700-00 for various traffic violations.
