An interim agreement was signed by stakeholders in the Vaal on Friday, to start tackling the sewage crisis.
This comes after growing concerns regarding the discharge of effluent and allegations that millions of liters of raw, untreated sewage stream into the Vaal River system, as a result of broken municipal wastewater treatment works in Emfuleni.
Jack Bloom, Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, said on Friday, stakeholders agreed to ensure uninterrupted operations at all 44 wastewater pump stations.
He said this will be done through staffing the stations.
This action is first in line, prior to the establishment of the Vaal Corporation Water Utility (Special Purpose Vehicle) is operationalised, meant to address underlying problems.
Stakeholders at the meeting include Emfuleni leadership, Rand Water and the Vaal Corporation Water Utility.
