The Knysna Municipality announced the brutal killing of Aubrey Ndoda Tsengwa, former Executive Mayor of the small town.
Tsengwa was gunned down by a drive-by shooter, on Wednesday evening, in the Joodsekamp area, while on his way home, with other passengers in his car.
Thando Matika, the current Mayor, said the town received the news of Tsengwa’s passing with shock and profound sadness because he was a well-known and respected figure in the Knysna community.
The Municipality also announced on Friday morning, that Mandla Matiwane, Ward 7 Councillor in Knysna, was also shot and killed on Thursday, evening.
He was shot a day after Tsengwa.
The Municipality also reminded residents that this is an ongoing SAPS investigation and urged them to allow the police to perform their duties.
Tsengwa is the twenty seventh politician to be murdered in the country, this year alone.
The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC), said 26 political hits and motivated violence, was recorded in South Africa’s five provinces, between January and early August 2026.
The data GI-TOC and South Africa Organized Crime Observatory (SA-Obs) argue targeted killings have risen by 108% in South Africa over the past decade.
