The O.R. Tambo District Municipality announced plans to rehabilitate the Ngqeleni Water Treatment Plant, located within the Nyandeni Local Municipality.
The plant was severely flooded in April this year.
The Municipality said stormwater systems there, were badly affected.
New construction is expected to strengthen the resilience of the plant against future floods.
Key interventions planned in the next year, will include the repair or replacement of damaged pumps, motors, valves and electrical equipment; rehabilitation of treatment units and pipelines; improvements to stormwater channels, culverts and drainage systems; and the installation of flood-protection measures.
The Municipality said in an update, that an amount of about R2 million, was set aside for this work.
Once completed, the project is expected to improve the reliability of potable-water production, reduce operational disruptions and strengthen the resilience of this critical municipal infrastructure, for the Ngqeleni community.
