Firefighters from uMtshezi Fire Protection Association and two teams from Working on Fire (WOF) and local farmers, battled a fire which broke out at around 11am on Friday morning.
The fire was fuelled by wind speeds of more than 45km/hr.
The fire is believed to have started on a state-owned farm, which does not comply with the National Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998.
The Fire Association said it jumped fire breaks into the property of a commercial farmer, who does comply with regulations.
Al-Imdaad Foundation also sent a rapid intervention vehicle as well as a large tanker.
The Fire Association reports that “under extreme conditions and solid team work we were able to bring the fire under control. We estimate approximately 900ha was lost with a ground extinguishing cost of approximately R218,904.00.”
This fire was also reported to authorities for investigation.
