Two young boys -Thabo Diloko Jeremiah, aged 9, and Lethabo Duncken Abraham, aged 8, drowned in mine dams near Allanridge.
Mining union, MACUA, has used the incident to raise awareness about dangerous water bodies and mining-related environmental conditions.
Sabelo Mnguni of MACUA, said “we mourn with the families and the people of Nyakallong, we extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, schoolmates and the entire community. But condolences are no longer enough. There have been too many deaths. Too much destruction. Too many warnings ignored. Too many communities expected to live with dangerous mining infrastructure while those with the power and legal responsibility to act look the other way.”
He also claimed “the community has protested repeatedly against Harmony Target Mine and demanded accountability, while engagements were postponed and the community excluded from discussions concerning the Voelpan Tailings Dam.”
