There were several uprooted trees around Johannesburg, since Friday into Saturday.

One tree closed off the M1 South on-ramp at Booysens, on Friday.

The Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) said a large tree fell across the roadway, near Cooper and Beryl Street in Cyrildene, near Athlone Girls’ High School.

Intersections at Church Street and 14th Avenue in Mayfair, as well as Beatrice Street and Princes Avenue in Windsor, were also obstructed, and motorists were advised to reroute via nearby side streets like Central Road, Bird Street, Countesses Avenue, or Rifle Range Road. 

In Witpoortjie, a severe incident occurred at Glen William Street and Hendrik Boom Street, where a large tree fell onto a JMPD vehicle and traffic was diverted to Generaal Pienaar Avenue or Prospect Street.

Another fallen tree blocked the M1 11th Avenue off-ramp near Houghton.

Emergency response teams, alongside Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), were dispatched to clear the debris. 

Vision Tactical, a security company, said it also deployed additional manpower across areas of operation, due to fallen trees.

Northern Cape

Emergency services have been clearing uprooted trees across roads in Kimberley. 

Eight homes had rooftops blown off in the city. 

An uprooted tree crushed a mini bus taxi on Saturday. 

Severe thunderstorms are expected to continue to affect several areas in the Northern Cape, on Saturday, into Sunday, including Dikgatlong, Kgatelopele, Siyancuma, Siyathemba, and Thembelihle municipalities. 

Strong winds and severe storms are expected to affect Kimberley, De Aar, Kuruman, Kathu, and Postmasburg.

Cape Town 

The elevated roadway (Drop & Go) at Cape Town International Airport was reopened after it was closed  temporarily due to strong winds.

Tertius Simmers, the Minister of Infrastructure in the Western Cape, announced that the Bainskloof Pass (MR201/R301) between Wellington and Ceres, was reopened, on Saturday. 

The Du Toitskloof Pass (TR9/2 / R101) between Paarl and Worcester, is closed, while the Huguenot tunnel is open to small vehicles only.
