The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works announced the temporary closure of the DR3475 at the Metswetsaneng in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.
The road is flooded and the Metswetsaneng crossing is overflowing, due to severe rains.
The Department also said its standby team has closed the affected section of the road as a precautionary safety measure.
Motorists and members of the public are urged not to attempt to cross flooded roads, low-lying bridges or overflowing streams, and to obey all road closure signs.
Similarly, Robert Mulaudzi, Spokesperson of the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services (EMS), said “it’s raining in most parts of City of Joburg, most roads are wet and slippery. Motorists are urged to continue to exercise caution while driving and avoid crossing flooded roads and low lying bridges. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to avoid crossing river streams when conducting daily activities.”
He also cautioned against baptism and cleansing rituals in the City’s river streams to prevent drowning incidents.
The Weather Service (SAWS) has warned against severe thunderstorms resulting in flooding over the North West, (except the extreme north-eastern parts), the northern half of the Free State and the north-eastern of Northern Cape (at Level 6) on Sunday.
Similar conditions are expected over Gauteng and the Highveld of Mpumalanga (Level 5), and over the north-east of North West, east of Northern Cape, west of Free State and along the Lesotho border (Level 4).
