The coastal erosion at the Diaz Beach, has forced both the Western Cape Provincial Government and the Mosselbay Municipality to devise a plan, to protect both people and properties.
The severe erosion at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay, began worsening after severe floods, between the 06th and 12th May, this year.
In a detailed news statement, the Municipality said it initiated a court order, to instal geotextile sandbags as an interim measure to stabilise the dune and reduce the immediate risk of further collapse.
Dune slopes are now unstable and damaged beach access stairs, while also threatening local infrastructure.
Rudolf van Jaarsveldt, Head of Communications at the Department of Environmental Affairs and Developmental Planning, said “the measure is intended to prevent damage to, or the collapse of, properties and infrastructure onto the beach, while also reducing risks to members of the public accessing an area that remains unsafe.”
He also said a permanent solution will be determined through the Basic Assessment process in the coming months and could include the removal of the sandbags.
