A total of nineteen (19) people were arrested since the start of the unrest in Durban.

Fifteen suspects were arrested on Friday evening, following violent protests around Durban and surrounding suburbs. 

Four suspects were arrested on Thursday for attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public. 

According to Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the majority of the arrested suspects are students.

Police said the suspects will face charges of public violence and malicious damage to property, with the possibility of other charges being added. 

Two houses were torched in the Umbilo area and several shops were damaged in and around Durban, whilst a few of those damaged shops were looted.

Police also said the MTN8 soccer fixture, between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, is going ahead as planned. 

All roads leading to the stadium are open and will remain open and police have contingency safety plans.
