CapeNature received the WESSA Green Coast Status for the Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
The programme recognises coastal sites that demonstrate effective conservation management, community participation, environmental education and responsible tourism.
Cape Nature said in a statement, “through our stewardship of protected areas, marine and coastal environments, biodiversity, wetlands, and ecosystems across the Western Cape, we continue to safeguard some of the country’s most globally significant natural landscapes while expanding protected areas and strengthening biodiversity stewardship.”
The recognition comes as South Africa marks 25 years of coastal stewardship, with WESSA celebrating 62 Blue Flag sites and 19 Green Coast sites nationwide.
The Blue Flag is an international environmental award programme recognising beaches, marinas and tourism boats that meet high standards for environmental management, water quality, safety, accessibility and environmental education.
