The South African Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (AMIE) said it welcomes Government’s plan for long-term trade resilience and competitiveness.

AMIE is the body for the South African meat import and export industry, purposed to get global access for SA beef, poultry, lamb and pork products.

Imameleng Mothebe, CEO of AMIE, said “diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) are likely to remain part of our reality into the future, but they do not have to halt all exports. Many of our trading partners are open to sourcing beef from areas in our country not affected by FMD, provided regionalization agreements are already in place.”

Mothebe said these agreements need to be concluded before outbreaks occur to ensure trade continuity and efficiency. She also said AMIE, is ready to support Government’s trade objectives, with sector expertise and established global network.
