The Rustfontein Water Treatment Works was commissioned by the former Minister for Water Affairs, Mr Ronnie Kasrils on the 18 November 1999.
The Treatment Works is responsible for water purification and supplies bulk water to the Mangaung Metro Municipality as mandated by the Water Service Act. Water is supplied to Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, Tweespruit, and Excelsior.
Rustfontein Water Treatment Works extracts raw water from the Rustfontein Dam, which is recharged by the Modder River.
The Dam is home to different fish species such as carp, barbel, yellow fish and mudfish and was constructed in 1955.
The Water Treatment Works uses hi-tech systems to check water levels at all the reservoirs it is feeding.
To ensure that it provides and maintains high quality water, samples are tested regularly in the in-house laboratory in accordance with regulations. Samples are also collected by the Institute of Groundwater Studies.
