City Power disconnected various businesses near the Joburg City Centre.

The Hursthill SDC alone, is owed about R1.6 billion.

On Friday, Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of the local power utility, said a joint law enforcement team disconnected power to a business in Industria and a mixed-use residential/commercial property in Westdene, due to non-payment of R14 million and R5 million.

He also said a vehicle repair business in Newlands, owing R1 million, and a block of flats in Brixton in arrears of R1.7 million, were also disconnected.

These customers were previously cut off for non-payment, but they later reconnected.

Nokuthula Nxumalo, Customer Service Manager at Hursthill SDC, said they will act against customers who restore disconnected electricity supply. “We are going to be engaging with our risk control department to explore measures in ensuring that these customers face the full might of the law.”

She also said customers must either folk out the full outstanding amount or make a payment arrangement.

“Customers have the option of paying 50% of the debt upfront and the remaining balance in six-month instalments, or 30% upfront with three-month instalments.”
