The 08th Coal and Energy transition day is expected to get underway at the Johannesburg Country Club on Wednesday.

Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, is scheduled to present the keynote address.

The event will be attended by government officials, coal producers, IPPs and investors.

Precious Mpepele, Head of Business Development for South Africa at Africa GreenCo, also at the event, says the energy transition is not a switch. It is a whole system moving from one state to another while the lights stay on.

“The real question in South Africa is not whether the country moves beyond coal. It is how the grid absorbs more renewable generation without losing security or stability. That is a question of market design as much as generation. It is answered through liberalised markets, credible routes to market for independent power producers, and trading structures that keep supply and demand in balance.”
