Authorities went to visit some roads damaged by February floods in Phalaborwa.

Barbara Creecy, Minister of Transport and Merriam Malatji, Mayor  of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Lucky Mohlala, Acting Mayor, of Mopani District Municipality as well as SANRAL management, were part of the visit.

Roads of concern are the R40 and R531 in Hoedspruit.

Creecy said contractors were on site to begin work on Tuesday, to fix extensive damage.

“There are two areas where the road was washed away and the culverts were washed away completely. There is another area at the Selati River bridge where there is evidence of a complete wash away.”

She also said these roads need to be completely rebuilt.

The commencement of rehabilitation work on at least eight roads, is expected to be completed in the next twelve months.

This includes work on the R40, R71, R524, R526, R527, R531, R576, and R578.
