The Council for Geoscience (CGS) confirmed the seismic event recorded in Buchufontein in the Northern Cape, was indeed an earthquake in the early hours of Sunday morning (22nd December 2024).
Preliminary findings of the Council indicate there was an earthquake at 02h51am, followed by an aftershock, at 05h28am.
The Council said the earthquake had a local magnitude of 5,3, while the aftershock was at 2,9.
The epicenter were located 20km, southwest of Buchufontein, in the Northern Cape.
