Electricity is now fully restored in parts of the City centre in Johannesburg.

This follows an explosion at the Bree Substation, on Tuesday night, 11 November 2025, which left three on site security guards badly injured.

The fire caused extensive damage to the 11kV incomer breaker, affecting Bree West, Bank City, Ferreirasdorp, Newtown, parts of the Joburg CBD and Marshalltown, including Diagonal, Sauer, Harrison, Simmonds, Ntemi Piliso, Rahima Moosa, and surrounding streets.

City Power said it suspects the incident was caused by tampering, because a burnt knife and items of clothing, were found near the damaged cables.

Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said “customers are advised to wait at least fifteen minutes before gradually reconnecting their appliances. This helps protect household equipment and reduces the risk of overloading the network during the initial restoration period.”
