The Derrick Nyathi stormwater culvert was completed on Monday, much to the excitement of authorities in Phalaborwa.
Merriam Malatji, the local Mayor, handed over the completed project, to the Lulekani township and Humulani village.
The rehabilitation project was funded by the Municipal Disaster Relief Grant (MDRG), allocated to repair and reinforce public infrastructure severely damaged by recent floods.
Malatji said the upgraded culvert serves as a vital arterial link, ensuring safe, reliable passage for motorists, pedestrians, and the broader community connecting Wards 13 and 14, including Lulekani township and Humulani village.
“This project is not only about rebuilding essential infrastructure,it is about restoring dignity, safety, and economic flow to our communities. In delivering this culvert, we have ensured that municipal expenditure directly empowers our people. At least 12 direct job opportunities were created for local residents, while 7 local small enterprises benefited directly through subcontracting and supply chain participation” said the Mayor.
The handover ceremony was also attended by key municipal leadership and technical teams, including the Oliver Mabunda -Speaker of Council, Makungu Khoza – Senior Manager of Technical Services and Eunice Mokwena- ward 14 councillor, as well as project engineers.
