eMfuleni Municipality spent R33 million on waste management, in five years, from 2021.
Jacob Mamabolo, MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Gauteng, says there is very little change on the ground.
Mamabolo said in a statement on Friday, costs associated with refuse collection are on the rise, but illegal dumping continues.
He said his department has been providing support to the Municipality, since 2025, where teams were deployed, to assist in clearing illegal dumping sites, part of the “phakama Vaal” campaign.
He also said a multi-sphere governmental intervention is underway.
