Hydrogen must be researched, tested and demonstrated where it creates genuine system and economic value and compete on merit.
This emerged at a high-level panel discussion titled “Eskom’s Green Hydrogen Technology Development Context and Approach.”
The discussions were part of this year’s Africa Green Hydrogen Summit.
Professor Prathaban Moodley, Acting CEO, at the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) said “hydrogen opportunity must be viewed within the broader energy system, with potential applications in hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, fertilisers, chemicals and industrial heat.”
He also said three key research and development priorities are “renewable energy-to-hydrogen systems linked to productive end uses, hydrogen for industrial heat and hard-to-abate processes as well as long-duration energy storage, alongside competing technologies.”
Delivering closing remarks at the summit, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy, said the summit was able to demonstrate that “we have moved from Powerpoint to Gigawatts, with the announcement of six Green Hydrogen projects.”
