Fines for illegal dumping can cost you between R500 and R1 000, or a prison sentence of between six months to two years.
The Stellenbosch Municipality has fined a resident of Cloetesville about R1000 for illegal dumping.
In an update, the Municipality said “thanks to the vigilance of a Cloetesville resident and the swift action of our Law Enforcement officers, a case of illegal dumping was reported today and the offender was fined R1 000.”
The City of Cape Town said it collected fines to the value of R4 million in the 2023/2024 financial year.
In Durban, a fine can go up to R5K.
The eThekwini Municipality fined a Durban sportswear company about R5 000 fine for illegal dumping, in November 2024.
The City said Simjees Lifestyle and Sportswear are responsible for regular illegal dumping on the corner of Cross and David Webster Street in the central business district.
Another similar fine was issued to a man caught dumping at the Mahatma Gandhi Park in Phoenix.
