Just when it was getting warmer, and hopes were high, of a warm Spring, some meteorologists, took to social media to warn of upcoming snowfall next week.
Maps shared via the Meteologix app, show snow is melting away, but AfriWx, Windy and the South African Weather Service (SAWS), are of the view, that another cold front is making its way to the South Western Cape, on Saturday evening.
It is expected to bring along rain.
As a result, snowfall is expected again, in several provinces, including the Northern Cape, KZN, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, the Free State, North West on Sunday and Monday.
The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi, is already cautioning residents of the possibility of a recurrence of snowfall, next week Monday and Tuesday.
In a media release, he said “the department has been in contact with the South African Weather Service, which has confirmed that early forecasts indicate the province will experience extremely cold temperatures on these days, potentially resulting in snowfall in some areas around the Drakensberg mountains, including parts of the Harry Gwala, uThukela, uMgungundlovu, and Amajuba Districts.”
He said Provincial Disaster Management teams are activated, as the Centre continues to engage directly with stakeholders, including municipalities through the respective District Disaster Management Centres, social partners, and government entities responsible for law enforcement, disaster response, and roads.
