Human remains believed to be of a 59-year-old Gauteng businessman, were found inside the intestines of a crocodile in the Komati River, in Komatipoort. 

The man’s Ford Ranger was swept away while trying to cross a flooded low-lying bridge in the Komati River, seven days ago.

The police said on Saturday, DNA tests will be conducted on the remains.

Following a week-long search for the missing businessman, the team identified a crocodile in the river, that was suspected to have carried out the attack on a missing person.

The police said the necessary permission to euthanize the crocodile, was obtained, to retrieve human remains.

The search team was made up of the police Search and Rescue Unit, NatJoint,  SanParks, Emergency Medical Services (EMS),  Securecon and Port Management Committee.

His Ford Ranger was found trapped in the low-lying bridge in the Komati River, Komatipoort.

Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi commended the team “I give honour to the dedicated team that has put their lives in danger to find the missing person. I know it was not easy, but they did not give up, even when they were faced with dangerous situation.”
