An upgrade on Jip de Jager Drive, into a dual carriageway, is now completed.
The project is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area.
The R77million project, began in October 2024, and construction was to dual Jip de Jager Drive from Kommissaris Street to Van Riebeeckshof Road, covering a distance of 2,3km.
Walking and cycling lanes on both sides of the dual carriageway, were also constructed, so was an extension of a pedestrian culvert at Welgemoed Golf Course and a construction of retaining walls for a section adjacent to Kommandeur Street.
There are also new embayments for buses and minibus-taxis.
The Welgemoed City Improvement District (WCID), with its own horticulturist, has planted indigenous plants at two identified sections along Jip de Jager Drive and a total of 60 trees were planted to replace those removed due to road widening.
Rob Quintas, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Mayoral Committee Member, said during his visit to the project this week, ‘we are grateful to the community of Welgemoed as a whole for the patience and support they displayed while this major upgrade of Jip de Jager Drive was under way. It is evident that road users are enjoying the new lanes, which assist in easing traffic congestion in the area and keep Cape Town moving. I want to thank the City project team and contractor for the meticulous implementation of these major roadworks; their experience and commitment to completing the project as efficiently as possible was evident throughout.”
