The Mosselbay Municipality warned residents of debris that will be lying along the coastline, following strong winds and rains forecast, into Friday.

The Municipality said although this material may appear untidy, natural woody debris is not regarded as ordinary waste.

Cornelle Carstens, Spokesperson of the Municipality, said in an update “in line with a municipal Council resolution, natural material such as wood and sand is generally not removed from the coastline because of the role it plays in natural coastal rehabilitation and protection. Municipal cleaning efforts focus on designated swimming beaches and the removal of unnatural waste, including plastics, containers and tyres.”

She also said during heavy rain and flooding, branches, tree trunks and other organic material may be carried from mountain and inland catchment areas into rivers.
