Residents confirmed the arrival of rain in several areas, on Thursday, including Orkney Vaal in the North West, Uvongo in KwaZulu Natal, Klein Karoo, Calitzdorp and Calvinia.
South easterly winds were also fierce in Cape Town.
There are no damages reported as a result.
But the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued several warnings, for Friday into the weekend.
Severe thunderstorms were upgraded to level 5, over the east-central parts of the Northern Cape.
Similar yet lesser conditions (at Level 4) are expected over the central and eastern parts of Northern Cape, western parts of Free State, the extreme western parts of North West, as well as the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
Damaging winds over the western parts of Northern Cape, the central and north-easern parts of Western Cape, as well as most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, are expected to be severe (Level 4).
The SAWS also warned against disruptive rainfall over the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape.
