Bitou Municipality has implemented Stage 2 water restrictions, since Monday, the 1 September 2025.

The Municipality notified its residents that the Keurbooms River flow, which is the main source of supply for the town, has been below the critical level of 300 litres per second,  for over a week now.

As a result, the Municipality has had to stop pumping water, to protect the ecological integrity of the Estuary.

The Ratepayers Association in Plettenberg Bay, said it has asked the Municipality for a backup plan.

The ratepayers also expressed concern with how the Municipality would adjust billing, since the basic charge allocated for 25 Kilolitres (Kl), regardless whether it is used or not.  This is because new restrictions will be at 15KL.

Cape Nature, said its Fountain Shack accommodation, part of the Robberg hiking trail in the area, would be temporarily closed, due to critically low water levels in the region.

Its JoJo tanks are currently empty.

“This means we are unable to provide water on site at the moment. We know this may impact your overall experience, and we sincerely apologise for this situation, which is unfortunately beyond our control” said Cape Nature.
