An active fire line yesterday was on the previously contained Kluitjieskraal side of the mountain.

The other fire, was on the Suurvlakte dip side of the mountain, above the Silverfontein farm.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s teams were monitoring and mopping-up throughout the night and are expected to continue today.

Today, aerial resources and teams are expected to focus on  preventing the fire from spreading south towards Elandsberg.

Dr Elna von Schlicht, Executive Mayor of the District, said yesterday, was the third day of heavy fire fighting.  “I wish to assure our citizens that that resources are being efficiently utilised, despite being under strain. There are sufficient vehicles, well trained firefighters, skilled ground teams and aerial support, who are supported by an integrated and multi-disciplinary team.  Furthermore, our positive relationships with local municipalities are in good standing, significantly contributing to the likelihood of success.”

Fire fighters are from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, CapeNature, Volunteer Fire Services and the Witzenberg Municipality have ground teams on the fire line.  The Cape Winelands District Municipality has 12 fire vehicles and crew who are supported by three ground teams, NCC and two Hueys from Leading Edge Aviation bringing the total aerial support helicopters to five.
