Frans Klopper, an engineer at MSW Consulting, who has been involved with the Gamtoos Water scheme for many years, is of the opinion that the flood of the 7th of May, might have been a 1:100 year flood.
The Kouga dam is currently at 101.47%.
The dam is currently spilling 42,000 litres per second.
Dam levels surged dramatically from 32% to over 110%, in just 24 hours.
The dam last overflowed in July 2024 and September 2023.
It is used by farmers in the area and Gamtoos Valley, and also supplies residential areas via the Loerie Balancing Dam.
Beneficiaries are small towns of Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, and Humansdorp, as well as the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ).
The Loerie dam is at 101.38%, spilling at 3,800 litres per second.
