The Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) said it plans to approach the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), as part of the Commission’s National Inquiry into Artisanal Mining and its impact on surrounding communities, the scope and tactics employed in Operation Vala Umgodi.
The labour union said its report, to be submitted tomorrow, Wednesday, the 02nd April 2025, would include events of the Stilfontein Massacre.
In a statement, MACUA said the report details events of Shaft 11 of the Buffelsfontein Mine.
Therein will be details of the “Massacre, Institutional Failure of the SAHRC, Parliamentary inaction, Survivor Testimonies,” among a list of issues in the report.
Sabelo Mnguni, MACUA National Administrator, said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, “we need bold, structural changes in law and policy, and a radical shift in how communities are treated and included in decisions that directly impact their lives and lands.”
